Nominations for the Labour leadership opened on Thursday 9 July 2026. By the end of the first day 322 of Labour's 403 MPs had nominated Andy Burnham, and he remained the only declared candidate after every other potential contender ruled themselves out. A further 27 MPs nominated him on Monday 13 July, taking the tally past the point where any rival could reach the 81 nominations needed (ITV News). Nominations closed at 6pm on Wednesday 15 July with the final official tally at 379, plus a single nomination for Catherine West (official list). On Friday 17 July he was declared Leader of the Labour Party at the special conference at the TUC's Congress House in London, backed by every affiliated union and socialist society, and gave his first speech as leader (AP).

How the race ran

  1. Nominations opened Thursday 9 July and closed at 6pm on Wednesday 15 July. A candidate needed 81 MP nominations to stand; the final official tally was Burnham 379, Catherine West 1.
  2. During nominations week, Labour's affiliated trade unions and socialist societies recorded endorsements; a candidate needed at least three. All 11 affiliated unions and all socialist societies nominated Burnham.
  3. Only one candidate qualified, so there was no ballot of members. 17 July: elected Leader of the Labour Party at the special conference, held at the TUC's Congress House in London, where he gave his first speech as leader.
  4. He is expected to become prime minister on Monday 20 July, once Keir Starmer tenders his resignation to King Charles III and the King asks him to form a government.
